Don't worry, the Geek Dad community was not devoured by living shadows. After the exodus from Wired, we simply moved on to the new Geek Dad site (http://www.geekdad.com). Project and discussion forums are up and running, with members already taking part in new and interesting conversations.

You may be asking, "But what about all of my wonderful content on this site?"

Forums: Keeping the Conversation Going

The new GeekDad site has forums for both General Discussions as well as Projects. Others can be added by the admins if a topic becomes popular enough to warrant its own forum. I've already restarted the Forum Games: Movies thread over there.

As for past threads, unfortunately there is no good way to dump all of the posts out of ning and into bbForums, while maintaining authors and thread levels.…

Okay, I got a little smarter this time - going to post this here as a blog post, so people can reply directly.

With us having to leave Wired, we're also going to have to leave this community behind (the Ning account being used, as well as all the coding, belong to Wired). But it sounds like there's enough passion and interest here to keep something going. So, what I'd like to do is set up a bbPress (Wordpress forum plugin) installation on GeekDad.com, and get as many folks here who want to be involved to copy the existing content over there. The forums, Projects, and Blogs can exist within the new forum space, and any of the photos we want to bring can get ported over to our Flickr group.

How does this sound to folks? And who is up for lending a hand in this effort?

(Note I have set with this post hidden for nearly three months.  I didn't open post it at the time because I wanted to let myself cool off before posting and to also prevent some faculty at my sons school from happening across it and then making things worse for my son and the other students.  Since then other things have happened so I am reposting it today with this note)  

Recap: I teach/host/herd a group of young people between the ages of 5-14 in doing makers projects at my sons school. Many of the young people doing the projects are the kids you would normally find fitting comfortably in a local comic shop, playing D and D or doing a blog.

Michael D. Sellers' book John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood came across my kindle as a third party gift from a fellow movie buff.  I woke up one morning and found it and a copy of all the John Carter books in the public domain sitting in a email.  

I know you might be wondering why I was gifted such a weird collection of books out of the blue.  I had night before told a friend of mine how I had been wanting to see the Disney John Carter movie but the trailer made it look like a Star Wars ripoff crossbred with Tarzan the Ape man.  (Yes, I knew they were both written by ERB long before Star Wars) 

My friend also awarded me with enough Amazon credits to rent the movie and a bet.  If I could read the three books and I still didn't want to watch the movie…

Just completed a home office after the oldest moved out. This is the centerpiece - and it ain't what it used to be, but she's still got it where it counts. Or something.

Rt.com is reporting a meteor came down in the Ural Mountains in Russia. The meteor hit at 9:30am local time or 3:30 GMT which is 10:30 pm Eastern standard time.  It exploded in the skys above the City of Chelyabinsk.  The Flash from the exploding meteor could be seen as far away as Kazakhstan. Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics told RIA-Novosis quoted by RT.com as say the rock was a meter is diameter and weighed a as much as much or more then a ton. 

The Chelyabinsk regional governor's office is reporting that the meteorite fell into a lake near Chebarkul. Residents of the city Chelyabinsk report that the air smelled like gun powder.  Yelena Smirnykh of the Emergency Situations Ministry reports…
