Community Blogs

Hey, Who Turned Out the Lights?

Posted by Randy Slavey on May 10, 2013 at 1:34pm 0 Comments

Don't worry, the Geek Dad community was not devoured by living shadows. After the exodus from Wired, we simply moved on to the new Geek Dad site (http://www.geekdad.com). Project and discussion forums are up and running, with members already taking part in new and interesting conversations.

You may be asking, "But what about all of my wonderful content on this site?"

Forums: Keeping the Conversation Going

The new GeekDad site has forums for both General Discussions as well as Projects. Others can be added by the admins if a topic becomes popular enough to warrant its own forum. I've already restarted the Forum Games: Movies thread over there.

As for past threads, unfortunately there is no good way to dump all of the posts out of ning and into bbForums, while maintaining authors and thread levels.…

Saving the GeekDad Community

Posted by GeekDad on April 22, 2013 at 10:43am 5 Comments

Okay, I got a little smarter this time - going to post this here as a blog post, so people can reply directly.

With us having to leave Wired, we're also going to have to leave this community behind (the Ning account being used, as well as all the coding, belong to Wired). But it sounds like there's enough passion and interest here to keep something going. So, what I'd like to do is set up a bbPress (Wordpress forum plugin) installation on GeekDad.com, and get as many folks here who want to be involved to copy the existing content over there. The forums, Projects, and Blogs can exist within the new forum space, and any of the photos we want to bring can get ported over to our Flickr group.

How does this sound to folks? And who is up for lending a hand in this effort?

A Visit to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Dangerous Realm

Posted by Mar Ruiz on April 5, 2013 at 9:52am 0 Comments

Tolkien started writing fiction shortly after WWI, when he was 25 years old. More than 20 years later, and already a seasoned writer, he presented some important elements of what he thought about fantasy for the Andrew Lang lecture at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. His essay: "On Fairy-Stories", sums up in a wonderful way what this incredible writer of fantasy fiction thought about the genre, and has many important lessons for anyone interested in visiting the realm of Faerie.

In it, Tolkien emphasizes that through the use of fantasy and imagination, the author can bring the reader to experience a world which is consistent and rational, under rules other than those of the normal world.

He calls this "a rare achievement of Art", and notes that it was important to him as a…

Nerd VS Geek Insulting habits

Posted by Glenn Gass on March 7, 2013 at 5:58am 4 Comments

(Note I have set with this post hidden for nearly three months.  I didn't open post it at the time because I wanted to let myself cool off before posting and to also prevent some faculty at my sons school from happening across it and then making things worse for my son and the other students.  Since then other things have happened so I am reposting it today with this note)

Recap: I teach/host/herd a group of young people between the ages of 5-14 in doing makers projects at my sons school. Many of the young people doing the projects are the kids you would normally find fitting comfortably in a local comic shop, playing D and D or doing a blog.

They are us 20 years ago ( ok me anyway).  I was a member of the AV squad....I was also the president, treasurer and only member for a couple of years.  It got me out of class a lot and that was why…

Review:John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood

Posted by Glenn Gass on March 7, 2013 at 5:30am 0 Comments

Michael D. Sellers' book John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood came across my kindle as a third party gift from a fellow movie buff.  I woke up one morning and found it and a copy of all the John Carter books in the public domain sitting in a email.

I know you might be wondering why I was gifted such a weird collection of books out of the blue.  I had night before told a friend of mine how I had been wanting to see the Disney John Carter movie but the trailer made it look like a Star Wars ripoff crossbred with Tarzan the Ape man.  (Yes, I knew they were both written by ERB long before Star Wars)

My friend also awarded me with enough Amazon credits to rent the movie and a bet.  If I could read the three books and I still didn't want to watch the movie…

What Edition Wars?

Posted by Jayson Peters on February 28, 2013 at 11:10pm 1 Comment

Just completed a home office after the oldest moved out. This is the centerpiece - and it ain't what it used to be, but she's still got it where it counts. Or something.

No, I'm not old enough for the 1st Edition AD&D books to be mine ... quite yet, anyway. They were my older brother's.

Too Late to Get With the Program?

Posted by Jayson Peters on February 28, 2013 at 10:30pm 0 Comments

Lately I am frustrated with the lack of digital literacy in the 21st century. It's like a cruel joke -- we have the greatest technology known to human achievement (since the aliens wiped out Atlantis, that is -- or so ancient astronaut theorists contend...) -- but so very few of us are truly conversant in how it all works. Myself included!

I am no troglodyte: I created Nerdvana, a popular and award-winning blog about pop culture and gaming, and I've even been able to contribute to GeekDad. WIRED. As the director of digital media for a newspaper that while not on the top of the stack is far from the bottom, I have brought the publication into the digital age with an electronic edition and multiple mobile apps in…
