So right now I am listening to David Parsons Ngaio Gamelan but frankly it is putting me in too much of a trance to write well. My brain wants to do Yoga when I listen to this stuff. I could put on something a little more upbeat but it can't have lyrics and I can definitely shoot off the other end of the scale as well. William Orbit is great until a club waif starts wailing in the background and then I am all distracted.
Anyone got any suggestions? (No Enya allowed or Loreena McKennitt over that Celtic stuff.)
What music do you listen to when you write?
If I'm writing in the morning then it's usually something like the foo fighters or Green Day. Basically something unoffensive that I've listened to that often I'm not paying any attention to the lyrics but is upbeat enough to keep me going.
If I'm writing late at night then most techno/trance music will suffice. I never take in the vocals in that kind of music as anything other than another instrument :)
I do something similar. Definitely will use the techno/trance stuff without lyrics. I am also prone to pulling out the movie soundtracks. Dare I confess a lot of John Williams?
When I was studying whilst still at school it was the Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves soundtrack that got me through them ;)
You know it's true.
Everything I do.
I do it forrrrr you.
I'm a big fan of Brian Eno's ambient music, specifically Music For Airports. It's easy to ignore, which is what I need when I'm writing.
I will try it.
The Lifehacker site has a nice section called Work Sounds about this very topic, btw.
Thanks Michael, I will check it out.
