What is Mafia? Sometimes called Werewolf, it's a fun party game of accusations and conspiracy. If you haven't had the pleasure of playing this charmingly devious game at a convention or on another web forum, there's a fun Flash animation here to help you understand the rules.

I'll be moderating a Dr. Who-themed Mafia game here on the GeekDad Community. If you're interested in joining in, all you have to do is sign up below.

Some rules to read before you sign up:

  1. First and foremost: this is just a game. It can sometimes be a tense and dirty game, yes, but you should be doing it for fun.
  2. Each daytime phase will last 1 week maximum. The night phase will last 48 hours.
  3. If a player hasn't posted in 72 hours, I'll prod them publicly in the thread. If they don't respond to the prod within 24 hours, I'll look for an alternate. 5 prods and it's an automatic replacement.
  4. If you're going on vacation, just post it to the thread in bold, or PM me.
  5. If you have any other questions, please consult the MafiaScum Newbie Guide and FAQ. If those don't answer your question, feel free to message me.

If you haven't already, just sign up to join the GeekDad Community here and then respond below if you'd like to join the game!

(Thanks to Michael Harrison for setting up the first GeekDad Mafia game, and providing the layout I'm using here, although the roles have been modified to add flavor)

How was Nathan a confirmed townie? How could we have known until after he was lynched?

Well, to the scum, he was confirmed. They know who all the townies are. Please notice that I haven't voted for anyone yet. I've only said that Mandy's third vote for a confirmed townie hints to me that she may very well be scum. Think of this way... if you were scum and you saw two (potentially town-aligned) players vote for another town-aligned player, hopping on-board is a good tactic.

Of course, the same could be said of the fourth person to hop on the bandwagon. Or even the second.

Thank you, Russell - that's the point I was trying to make. Michael is making it sound like it was known that poor Nathan was innocent before we voted.

Seriously, guys? It was known. To the scum. That's my whole point.

I absolutely understand Michael's thinking on this one.  Scum knows.  Anyone piling on Nathan in Day 1 should automatically be scrutinized to try and out their motivations.  Even Michael himself, who joined the bandwagon late in the day and assured Nathan's lynch.  I'm not prepared to vote, we still have a few days, but I am growing more concerned about the Nathan voters, particularly those that have been laying very low here in Day 2.

In order to foster discussion going to take a stab at my own "handicapping" of our little group here based on what has been said and done so far:

1. T Kelly's points are good, so I'll give one point to everyone voting for Nathan - (Kevin, Chris, Mandy, Russell, Michael, Gene)

2. Michael's "Third vote is scumtell" (thanks for the analysis Michael) - I'm not a big fan of this but let's throw in a point for each of those (T Kelly, Mandy, Michael)

3. Who might see Valerie as the greatest threat? Hard to read too much here - she didn't vote, but she was definitely game-savvy, which might be reason enough. But she was most critical of Michael. So let's add a point here to Michael for that.

This would give us the following totals:
3 points - Michael
2 points - Mandy
1 point - T Kelly, Kevin, Chris, Russell, Gene
0 points - Daniel, Kevin

Additions? Subtractions? Throw it in the trash?

In defense of my final vote against Nathan, I did that at the 0th hour. We had no time left, and it didn't look like Valerie or anyone else was going to pipe up. I knew if I didn't do anything, we would lose our vote.

Can you elaborate on why I get a point here? Valerie, a vanilla townie with no information whatsoever, was suspicious of me. I don't really see how that affects things one way or another.

Again, I keep coming back to the weapons that town has at our disposal. I'm worried that the townies who might have good solid info at this point (read as: special roles) are inactive. At this point, we've heard nothing from Kevin or Chris, and nothing of real substance from Daniel. At this point, being quiet starts to, A. Look suspicious, and, B. Wastes your abilities.

If one of you guys have one of our special powers and you're not trying to figure out a way to use it to our advantage... we're in trouble.

Also, Gene, it looks like you counted Kevin twice. Does he have 1 or 0 points?

Thanks - bad math, Kevin has 1 point, Bob has 0 points.

On clarifying the one point from Valerie, I'm just throwing out there that IF you were scum you might have felt more threatened by her and hence wanted to see her removed earlier.  A weak argument I admit but I'm not sure if we really have any strong arguments yet.

Really at this point it's all about perceptions. There aren't really any known facts, other than what was said and who voted for who. My accusations are based off of my own perceptions.

Au contraire. There may very well be some known facts. At this point, it's a dance between the townies who have those facts, and the mafia, who want to kill the townies who have special abilities which allow them to gain information.

By the third round, that information needs to start to come out. We have to understand--even those with special roles--that sometimes, getting information out to the town at large is worth dying for. Remember, if you get killed but the town wins, you win.

I really, really want to hear from Kevin and Chris before we resort to anything like name- or roleclaiming. And I'd love for Daniel to offer up something a little more substantial than his previous comment.

my vote was out of desperation.  I felt like we had to lynch someone.  Now I wish we would not have done it because now we are down 2 townies and the odds are stacking up against us real fast.  As far as the point system on day 1 I do not agree with giving someone a point because they voted for the wrong person.  Maybe the next few days but first day is so tough.

I am not thinking Michael is a scum....  But I have been wrong before.

Thanks for your patience while I was on vacation.

Vote Count 2.1

Michael Harrison: 2 / Chaos Mandy Horetski, Russell Collins
Not Voting: 7 / Gene Davis, Bob Sandlan, Michael Harrison, Kevin Clem, Chris Earnest, T Kelly, Daniel Donahoo

With 9 players, it takes 5 votes to convict. The deadline is Saturday, June 9 at 12:00p MDT (GMT-6:00)

Kevin, you haven't responded yet in Day 2. Please do so by 10:30p tomorrow (24 hours).

{*apologies* 3 heavy work days.}

I am intrigued by the focus on numbers...rather than on actions and words.

Indeed, it was Michael who was able to make the final move that tipped the beautiful Valerie into the abyss...and he has been doing a lot of talking...and everyone is interested in those who remain quiet, which is a fair assumption.

I am beginning to have a feeling Michael's obsessive talking and suggesting of strategy is either a fine ploy, or the demonstrated actions of a townie trying his best to get things done right. I am aware I voted for him last turn, though i waiver now - if only slightly.

I'd like to see some of your fine personalities shining through...it can be a little shady in this room...how many women do we have left amongst us? This man would like to know...
