What is Mafia? Sometimes called Werewolf, it's a fun party game of accusations and conspiracy. If you haven't had the pleasure of playing this charmingly devious game at a convention or on another web forum, there's a fun Flash animation here to help you understand the rules.
I'll be moderating a Game of Thrones-themed Mafia game here on the GeekDad Community. If you're interested in joining in, all you have to do is sign up below.

Lets roll again.
Permalink Reply by Randy Slavey on May 11, 2012 at 11:59am Michael, where's the wrap-up story? I've enjoyed reading your fluff posts; you have to finish. What happens to Arya, Sansa, and Daenerys? Are Cersei, Jaime, and Sandor happy at the results, or do they realize the terrible mistake they've made? I need closure.

A retinue of the Kingsguard, Ser Jaime Lannister at the lead, walked down the aisle of the throne room. Ned Stark followed, his hands bound in cold iron manacles. The Lord of Winterfell was bruised and bloodied and limped from a sword slash down his leg.
"Your Grace," the Kingslayer said, bowing before King Joffrey. "I bring before you Ned Stark, who has something that he would like to tell you." Jaime sneered back at Ned. "Kneel before your king, traitor. I'd prefer not to cut you down again, but I will."
Ned slumped slowly to his knees, staring dumbly at the carpeted floor of the Great Hall. "Your... Your Grace," he muttered through bloody lips. His eyes rose to the iron dais where Joff sat. To one side was the Queen Regent, Cersei Lannister. To the other was the King's faithful Hound, Sandor Clegane. And there was Sansa, cowering nearby, watching her father with fear and reproach.
"I... I confess my treason, Your Grace. I confess my treason to the crown and to your..." It hurt him so much to say it, but he went forward. He did it for Sansa and for Arya. "And to your father, King before you. I... I ask to take the black in repayment for my crimes."
The King watched Stark for a moment, then slowly turned to Sansa. He narrowed his eyes, turned back to his former Hand, and said, "I think not, Lord Stark. High treason is punishable by nothing less than death."
Sansa's screams echoed through the Great Hall, but Ned felt only numb certainty. He had played the Game of Thrones, and he had lost.
Later, when he was at the block and Ilyn Payne held Ned's own greatsword, Ice, aloft, Ned looked out to the crowd. He saw Arya. She had escaped the clutches of the Lannisters!
Ned saw another familiar face shrouded in dark cloaks. A black brother. Yoren, who would have taken him north to the Wall. Perhaps Yoren would recognize his daughter. Perhaps she would be able to return to Winterfell.
But as his family's sword came down, Ned spotted a flash of red behind his youngest daughter. The cloaks of the Kingsguard, with Jaime Lannister in the lead. Arya turned, but too late, and they were upon her. And then, four hundred year old Valyrian steel found its mark, and Ned knew no more.
Across the Narrow Sea
In Qarth, the young Mother of Dragons stood in the House of the Undying. Her lips blue with the shade of the evening, she shuddered as a horrifying scene played out in front of her. A public execution, where a massive wolf was beheaded as his pups mewed around him. A lion leapt down from above, tearing into the wolf's corpse, then making short work of the pups.
Daenerys ran from the room, and in the next, she saw a wedding. A beautiful red-haired girl next to a golden-haired boy with a crown upon his head. Another girl, sister to the first but with darker features, stood beside another groom. A gaunt man with no skin. The girls' lips were blue from cold and they were coated in ice, but worst of all, there were nooses around their necks.
The wedding party proceeded out of the hall, the crowd cheering at the couples' first beddings, but instead of taking the brides to their bedrooms, the crowd threw them both out of the window. The nooses caught and the girls, both now smiling, hung dead and naked from a gibbet.
In the next room was a den of lions, all snapping at a pile of rotten meat in the center. Hunks of green tinged stag and wolf. Mountains of festering fish and squid and fowl. The lions devoured the disgusting meal, and when it was down to scraps, fought amongst themselves for the remains. In the end, after what seemed like days, all the lions were dead of their wounds or of the foul supper. Daenerys was about to leave through the door, but then she saw movement. The lions were rising. Their eyes were a cold blue and their now-frozen bodies steamed in the warm air.
Quickly, Dany wandered to another room. This one was filled with blood and the corpses of countless dragons. She screamed this time. "No!" Wading through the filth, blood and viscera and eggshells, she clambered for the other side. But it was too deep. Then, one of the corpses shifted, rising, looking down at her with glassy eyes. "My child," Dany began. "My Viserion?"
The dragon opened its mouth and Daenerys was engulfed in flame. She felt her skin shrink, tear, ignite. Her blood of dragons was no more, and she was dying.
In an empty room of the Palace of Dust, a young girl with silver-blonde hair gapes at nothing, holds her hands out to ward off an invisible gout of flame. She falls to the ground, dead. Behind her, a warlock named Pyat Pree smiles through blue lips. "Many enter," he says. "But few leave."

Permalink Reply by Michael Harrison on May 11, 2012 at 1:37pm Wow! What a blast, guys. I had a great time running this. I apologize for my delays toward the end, and with getting the finale up. Still no baby yet, but things are moving along nicely.
I would absolutely love to play another mafia game, and we can certainly promote it and maybe get a few more people to join in. My only question is: anyone else want to run it? And any ideas on a good theme to go with for the next game?
Permalink Reply by Randy Slavey on May 11, 2012 at 1:58pm Dr. Who Mafia. Town-aligned are those whose sole focus is Earth. Mafia could be anyone who wants to destroy it. Third-party people would be those who are more concerned with their own interests, or those of somebody/something outside of just the Earth's welfare.
Lots of other characters available to tweak it.
Permalink Reply by Gene Davis on May 11, 2012 at 3:17pm I like the Dr. Who idea. Also we could go LotR:
Town: Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, etc
Mafia: Witch King, Shagrat, Gorbag
Possible third party/Serial Killers: Gollum, Saruman, Shelob
Perhaps have a special rule with the Ring?

Permalink Reply by Nathan Barry on May 11, 2012 at 3:36pm Excellent wrap up Michael, thank you so much for running the game - especially with the impending addition to the family.
I'm definitely up for playing again, I really enjoyed it. I don't think I really know the game well enough to be able to run one though.
As for themes, how about a Battlestar Galactica one - easy to name the scum there! Or even the ultimate sci-fi good vs. bad and go for a Star Wars one?

I won't be able to run another game any time soon, with the wee one on her way, but I've posted my setup document here for anyone who wants to check it out and replicate/change it for their own game. Might I recommend more players for a game that has a 3rd party SK, though?
And definitely sign me up for a spot if anyone does decide to run one.
Also, here's the graveyard thread. I'll let the scum post the link to their thread if they so desire.
