Awesome logo!  Been watching a lot of those episodes with the boys lately.

We play alot.  I had a family server running for awhile, but since we've got into mods, its mostly creative mode for us.  What do you think of the new updates?  Cats FTW?

Love the new jungle biomes and the cats. I managed to start building my own little cat army, actually :)

I like playing the survival mode because I personally find something satisfying about mining all your resources and using them to build things.

What kind of stuff have you made?

Well, honestly I haven't been playing much personally, other than constantly having to update mods.  My son keeps finding new ones (we make him watch youtube/yogscast with the sound off due to the constant swearing) and so I've been busy just keeping up to date.

My biggest accomplishments were back when we had our family server.  I started a server and got me, my brother, my son, and my sister in law all on in survival mode before beds were invented.  That was CRAZY, since we really were running for our lives every night, so I built an entire town with huge walls and lights everywhere so we could run around at night without fear.  Then spiders learned to climb walls, and we were in trouble again, but then beds were invented and it became too easy.  Every new release, we'd go further and further out, generating new lands, but eventually sometime around Beta, the old seas went up a whole block and the old world just wouldn't update anymore.  We had a sky city, a city on a lake, a railroad from one city to the other (they were days apart in walking-time), and eventually, when the nether was added to multiplayer, a nether railroad that let us go from spot to spot on our world instantly.

The last thing I made was a pretty extensive farm after we started a new replacement world following 1.0 release and I got into animal breeding.

However, my son got tired of survival and now he's into instant gratification with the Too Many Items mod.  He uses it more to just sketch out ideas rather than a game.

It might be cool to start a Geekdad server, though!

I think a Geekdad server would be awesome!

I have only been playing since 1.4 or 1.5 (can't remember which), but I started my own server with a couple friends. One of them has been laying out a massive town kind of like what you described. It will have roads and walkways along with shops and places for people to build their own homes.

My girls are a little too young to play yet, but my oldest loves to watch me play. She likes to direct me to jump into water a lot :)

If you want, check out CaptainSparklez's channel or ChimneySwift11's channel. CaptainSparklez's doesn't have nearly as much profanity, but they drop the f-bomb occasionally. ChimneySwift11, from what I've seen so far, doesn't use profanity, but they will, on occasion, throw in a "that's what she said" joke or something similar. Just some recommendations if you wanted to offer your son alternatives to the Yogscast.

I was an adict. I had to stop playing for a while and am just now returning to the game. Anyone have any server recommendations?

Maybe. What kind of experience you looking for? With so many server mods now, you can play nearly any kind of game you want.

I dont care. Friendly? I am interested in building not combat...

You're more than welcome to join my server. It's survival, but no PVP or anything like that.

There is also this minecraft forums thread you can check out. They have lots to choose from.

I prefer small servers, less public = no griefing. I have had too many projects destroyed by trolls.

that's why I play on Xbox.....just me and 3 or 4 friends on at the same time and building to our hearts content. We built ourselves a nice little seaside city, where everyone is in one community, free to build anything that they want to. There are entrances to our many mines within the edges of our small but flourishing city, a watchtower, railroad system, sidewalks, street signs, we even went so far as to build a monument in the center with the 3 primary builders dedications on it.

How does the Xbox version compare to the PC?  I ran a private server for awhile so that my son, brother and I could all play together, but it got to be a chore.  Is the world persistent, so that you can play at different times?  Can you play with players both locally and over the web at the same time?

Unfortunately no one can be on just any world. The original player who created the world has to be online and in that particular world in order for others to be on it as well. IMHO the worst feature of the Xbox version. And also you cannot just enter a random players world, you can only go into the worlds of people that are on your friend list. And it does support up to 4 players on local split screen, and 8 players in any given world. The biggest detriment to the local split screen is that if any of those players that does not have an active Xbox Live profile(not just a local Xbox profile), meaning that the individual players must have an Xbox Live Gold account, do not keep the items in their inventories when they exit the world. The individual's items can, however, be placed in a chest before logging off to keep this from being a hassle and losing major resources and tools.
