Assignment #1: Team Name & Logo

While we wait for our new league to finish adding teams and for rules to get settled, there is one important activity you and your kids can do right away: Name your team.

In the 80+ seasons I have been playing fantasy sports, the naming is a ritual that is steeped in puns and personal backstory. Here's some of my favorite examples from my Reality league:

  • Virginia Wolves
  • San Francisco Fog
  • Odessa Fightin' Octopi
  • Charlotte Brontes
  • Colorado Springs Eternal
  • Manila Ice
  • Springfield Isotopes
  • Macon Whoopie
  • Missouri Loves Company
  • Maine Squeeze (OK, this one is mine)

A few owners have already submitted their names. Feel free to stick with those, or consider coming up with something new. Outside of avoiding offensive references, there are no wrong choices for naming your franchises. I prefer the holism of everyone having a "Location Nickname" format, but it isn't required to do so.

We'll also need a logo to visually reflect that name. This should be 100% done by the kid members of your ownership team (although the adults will likely have to help with the technology to get it into a digital format). Do the logo design after you agree on a name, looking at existing sports or other brand logos for some ideas on how to visualize it. I'm looking for something I can use in any reporting on the web or in PDFs, should I get that ambitious.

Ultimately, what I will need from you are the following:

  1. Your official team name (with or without a location)
  2. A digital version of a team logo (minimum 300 px x 300px)
  3. A brief backstory on why you your team name and logo are what they are

You can post as a reply here, attaching any file(s) you need for the logo. Everyone try to work on this over the next week or so. We'll set a deadline if they are too slow trickling in.

3. We chose the Butler Bounty Hunters because of our location (Butler County, KS) and a weird family obsession with Boba Fett which is honestly more my children than myself.  The logo is my 6 yo daughter on Halloween last year.  She is a little bit of a nerd.  The "art" of the logo was done by my son who will be the other head of our three headed team.

Team Garmendez will be the DEEP RIVER CIRCLES.

When we moved to our current home in Texas several years ago, we had just completed an international assignment in South America.  But despite me being born and raised in NYC, and my boys having been born in Florida, our family has become very comfortable in our new home..so our team is named after our street !! ...Deep River Circle.

After several failed proposed names that were based more on our individual tastes, we could all easily agree on our street pride and love for the game.

Recognizing our home town (Fishers, IN - a suburb of Indianapolis) and further feeding my son's Minecraft addiction, Team Gibbs will be the Fishers Creepers.  We're mean, we're green, and we'll blow up anything you hold dear.

After many iterations, we have settled on the Greenwood Aglets from one of our favorite Phineas and Ferb episodes and now we even have a theme song!  

We tie the world together!

We chose the "Chicago Hot Dogs" as our team name because Chicago is
well known for our unique style of serving hot dogs.  We're famous for
our steamed all-beef frankfurters on warm buns dressed with mustard
and relish.  And examine our logo carefully.  Just like Chicago dogs,
our mascot has mustard and relish but no ketchup.  And we're planning
on not having to "catch-up" ourselves.

And the other meaning of "hot dogs" is players who can perform fancy
stunts and amazing maneuvers.  Chicago teams definitely qualify.
Exhibit A to prove this point comes from a famous Chicago team - the
White Sox.  Remember when Mark Buehrle chased down a bouncer off his
foot and flicked it backhand to Paul Konerko who caught the ball
barehanded at first.  That was some great hot-dogging.

We're in good shape, but we still need names and logos from a few league owners. Tuesday is a great day to finish that off.
