While we wait for our new league to finish adding teams and for rules to get settled, there is one important activity you and your kids can do right away: Name your team.
In the 80+ seasons I have been playing fantasy sports, the naming is a ritual that is steeped in puns and personal backstory. Here's some of my favorite examples from my Reality league:
A few owners have already submitted their names. Feel free to stick with those, or consider coming up with something new. Outside of avoiding offensive references, there are no wrong choices for naming your franchises. I prefer the holism of everyone having a "Location Nickname" format, but it isn't required to do so.
We'll also need a logo to visually reflect that name. This should be 100% done by the kid members of your ownership team (although the adults will likely have to help with the technology to get it into a digital format). Do the logo design after you agree on a name, looking at existing sports or other brand logos for some ideas on how to visualize it. I'm looking for something I can use in any reporting on the web or in PDFs, should I get that ambitious.
Ultimately, what I will need from you are the following:
You can post as a reply here, attaching any file(s) you need for the logo. Everyone try to work on this over the next week or so. We'll set a deadline if they are too slow trickling in.

1) Honey Nut Ichiros
2) Uploaded
3) My son has always loved this team name. Being from Seattle it fits, plus Ichiro (used to be his favorite player)

Permalink Reply by chuck.crossett on April 9, 2012 at 3:55pm We've decided to be the Maryland Blue Crabs, since they are a famous symbol of the Chesapeake Bay and my son already had a drawing at the ready. All it needed was a little sports logo mods and voila!

Permalink Reply by Luke Rose on April 19, 2012 at 4:21pm Have you been to see THE Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball? http://somdbluecrabs.com/index.cfm
They're owned by Brooks Robinson.

Permalink Reply by Kevin Makice on April 12, 2012 at 3:04am OK, after a hectic week and some logistical hurdles, we have a name and logo for Team Makice: the Indiana Jones.
Indiana beat out both the Washington Monuments and Chichén Itzá Pizzas. Backstory is being composed.

Owensboro Sluggers - My family and I recently visited the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum in nearby Louisville, Kentucky. We had an absolute blast. I highly recommend it for baseball geeks. Louisville Slugger was the first team name that came to mind for my eight year old, so we agreed Owensboro Sluggers would be a great choice. For our image, my son selected a background of the bridge in Owensboro that goes over the Ohio River to Indiana. He tried to duplicate the actual Louisville Slugger logo over the background image.

Permalink Reply by Steve Henry on April 14, 2012 at 5:23pm To be honest, we are recent transplants to Western Kentucky. I took a new job at the end of August and my family joined me at the beginning of November. For some reason, my boys have latched onto Louisville instead of UK. My oldest son's teacher (a big UK fan as is most of the population) keeps asking him if he wants to graduate to 5th grade.... he may need to rethink his new allegiance.
I knew this was basketball country but until you live here I don't think you fully realize what true basketball country is. We moved from Memphis which is a basketball town but it pales in comparison to the fanatical fans in Kentucky.
I was actually in Evansville, IN when Indiana won the regular season match up. We were in restaurant without any tvs. All of sudden the place erupted (must have been using their "summoning" powers if you've seen the smart phone commercial with the boyfriend who is watching the game on his phone). I knew the game was going on and assumed UK won until I realized I was on the other side of the Ohio River.
I enjoy the Indiana-KY bantering back and forth at work. I look forward to our rivalry as well.
Permalink Reply by Thomas Watson on April 14, 2012 at 2:21pm Team Watson is going to be the Battin' Rouge King Cake Babies.
We were brainstorming good local names, and thought a King Cake Baby would be a good one. King cakes, for those that don't know, are a common tradition in New Orleans during Mardi Gras time. Inside each king cake is a small plastic baby; whoever gets the piece with the baby has to buy the next king cake.
My son liked the pun "Battin' Rouge," so we made that our team's hometown.
We had a lot of fun making the logo. Thomas drew a baseball and cut it out, and I helped him take a picture of it over some Mardi Gras beads. We then uploaded it to an online photoeditor, played with some filters, and added text.

Permalink Reply by michael.a.lally on April 15, 2012 at 5:34pm Hi all....I was voted down by my co-owner on the original name I had listed. We are going to go with the Fairport Lally Gaggers now. Anyone familiar with the classic baseball movie, "Bull Durham" will recall the scene where the manager yells at the team about "lolly gagging". When you say "Lally Gaggers", please do so in the voice of Robert Wuhl. :)
We are working on the logo! We will have it soon!
