I'm looking to gauge interest in forming a new, recurring fantasy baseball league for the GeekDad community. The target is 16 franchises with ownership teams consisting of parent-kid partnerships. It is important that kids take an active role.

Ideally, owners will:

  1. Include at least one parent and one child for each franchise
  2. Commit to the full season, which includes the initial draft near the end of April through the playoffs in August
  3. Participate by submitting regular starting lineups and providing some kind of weekly quote on the status of the franchise
  4. Provide some backstory about the awesome name and logo you adopt for your franchise
  5. Agree to some interviews along the way about the experience of playing GDS fantasy baseball, and possibly other topics related to baseball (e.g., keeping a scorecard at a game)
  6. Try to go to at least one baseball game (major league or minors) during the season

We can make a go of any league that has at least 8 franchises, but we'll definitely pick an even number of franchises and cap out participation at 20. Divisional alignment will be done after we have our final list of owners, to allow for us to group teams geographically as much as possible.

To claim a franchise, reply to this thread expressing your interest and send me an email (kevin@makice.net) with your name and contact information, including your location. The list in the thread will serve as a waiting list until you are invited to officially join.

My two sons (ages 8 and 12) will join me for one of the franchises. We may pick up some of their friends on the ownership board, too. We solemnly swear to enforce a "No Mets" rule on our roster.

I'm in. My 10 year old son will be doing it with me, & my 6 year old son will most likely assist as well. Looking forward to it.

Awesome. Got your info in the email. Updating the ownership list.

My 11 year old daughter and I would love a franchise. Claiming the team name "Tastes Like Chicken" right now! :)

Great! email me your city/state location, and I'll add you to the franchise board.

Kevin - can you confirm you received my email please?

Also - what type of league will it be? Pure stats, head to head? Draft or auction? :) I imagine draft and stats would be easiest.

Got your email.

Definitely weekly games, head to head. Likely rotisserie style categories, where we directly compare different stats to score points. Draft over auction is my preference, but we'll talk through those options as a group in the days ahead, as well as what tools (including manual calculation) might be available to us during the season to manage the league.

My 10 year old son and I will join.  My 12 year old daughter will likely offer her opinion as well.

Thanks. Got the email and added you to the list.

Me and my 13 year old son would love to join.

Got your email. Added you to the owner list.

I'm interested in joining and playing with my 9-year-old son, but I am a novice (played fantasy football several times, but never fantasy baseball).  Though I know a bit about baseball, I don't have a great deal of knowledge about current players (unless they played in the '90s, which is about when I stopped paying active attention to MLB).  That said, I'm interested and would love to introduce my son to baseball fandom.

Does fantasy baseball have a steep learning curve?  Any recommended resources for learning more?  Would I be holding people back by having to learn on the fly?
