"Thanks Brian. The problem is the font I need to use isn't actually a web font and we don't have the license to make it one - would have to pony up some more money. It's also rotated and has some effects on it which is why I did it as…"

"Nathan, Thanks! You can change the font in CSS. Just add or link in an @font-face rule to your hosted font and change the font-family property to match. The code would look something like this: https://gist.github.com/4172535 . You can then…"

"Very cool. I only have a very basic understanding of JS, but could this code be adapted to use graphics for the number? I'd love to use it on our Magic Belles site, but we use a very specific font that you can't get as a web font."

Christmas Countdown

Right now, my kids are counting down to December 1, when they can open their Lego Advent calendar. Since they will soon enough be counting down to the main event, I went ahead and whipped up this very simple little counter in html to show the C-minus day. I embedded it in my LAN splash page using an…See More

Lego Raspberry Pi Case

"I'm using it as a HTPC with Rasbmc, an XBMC port for RPi (http://www.raspbmc.com). It works like a dream. I'm streaming 1080p over the LAN perfectly and have not had a single crash or reboot since it's been up. I'm controlling it…"

"That is an very cool case, what do you use your rasberry for? I'm thinking about buying one and use it as an HTPC, with XBMC. Anyone in here who has done that? Is it good for showing 1080p?"

Pumpkin Pi

Posted on October 26, 2012 at 9:48pm 1 Comment

Some dozen years ago, I very nearly failed a 200-level Electrical Engineering course. More than fifteen years ago was the last time I did much programming. In FORTRAN. This year, I decided to geek out a Jack-o'-Lantern with LEDs and a motion sensor to activate a special sequence for visitors. The whole thing is driven by a Raspberry Pi and programmed in Python. Why a Raspberry Pi? Well, it's all the rage right now, and, while an Arduino is probably a better choice here, a Pi was what I had.…

The Irrigation Situation

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

My geeky garden required a suitably geeky irrigation system. The garden is laid out in eight 12-foot rows, located about 50 feet from the nearest hose bib. I am also working on some container herbs and fruits that will be located on the back patio, right around the hose bib. I would like to put as many of those on the irrigation system as possible, when they are completed. As I pondered my watering needs, the following set of engineering requirements emerged:

  • Automated – hand…

Gardening With Kids – Starting Flower Seeds

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 11:00pm 2 Comments

Tonight's big project was starting some flower seeds. While Mom was at class, the four mini-geeks and I set up on the dining room table and got to it.

First, we amassed our supplies. Foremost, and I guess the reason for all this is the seeds. As high-quality seeds have started appearing in the grocery stores, they’ve become an impulse buy. We wound up with several packets of flower seeds this way. Next are trays to start them in. I’m using peat trays. They came…
