Is this article wrong? Can we raise responsible Geek boys (and girls)?

Started Mar 21, 2012 0 Replies

I was at the grocery store last weekend when I saw this article in Philadelphia magazine (I live near Philly) about the (alleged) sorry lives of modern boys.  I have 2 modern boys and so I found the…Continue

Guitar Hero drum mod to MIDI drumkit

This is a recent project to mod a broken Guitar Hero World Tour drum controller from a yard sale into a real electronic drum kit.  The nitty gritty details are in the blog but basically I opened the case and attached all the piezo electric drum triggers in the kit to an Arduino, and then used the Arduino to trigger MIDI notes that played sounds through a PC.  Overall, it turned out well.  It was my first time using an Arduino and I completely love the little thing now.  Here's a video of my son…See More

The Avengers - reviews and discussionsSo I was able to see the Digital 3D version of the Avengers yesterday, after convincing my brother to avoid studying for finals to see it, as my wife refused.  She likes Buffy and Angel, etc., but even Joss's presence didn't help, she watched the trailer and thought it looked stupid.  I…See More

Tech hero without a golden parachute?

Just read a great article on wired about Linus Torvalds, the man who started the Linux kernel.

http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/03/mr-linux/

Great stuff.  I love journalism that goes deep and gets information from the source, instead of just reposting web rumors.

But, am I the only one who feels like the story is a little bit of a tragedy?  The only big payout he gets from Linux taking over…

Destroying Electronics to Make Robot Models

Posted on March 17, 2012 at 11:30am 2 Comments

So I tend to be a bit of a hoarder, at least of electronics.  My piles of old motherboards, power supplies, pc cards, and mystery boxes labeled 'Linksys' had gotten a bit out of hand, so my wife insisted recently that I put some aside for the boys to 'take apart', which I reluctantly agreed to do, assuming that we'd carefully disassemble things and look at them and possibly put them back together, carefully.

Not many days later, I entered the kitchen to see my precious hoard being…

Minecraft mods and homeschooling

First, this Geekdad idea is great!  I have two boys, 10 and 6, and I've resigned myself to the label of 'geek' or something analogous.  As I get used to posting under my own name and not a snarky and ironic acronym accompanied by a portrait of an 80's robot, I think this will be a good place to exchange stories and ideas.

So, first post.  My sons are both homeschooled.  My oldest is both gifted and has Asperger's, so public school was not working.  They are both thriving being…
