Safe Geeking
I was wondering if any of you have ever gotten "flak" for engaging in "dangerous" activities with your Geeklings.
I won't allow my son to play w/ the powertools, but will work with him in the workshop with breadboards, wiring, and low power electroncs (batteries).
This is him when he was…

Riding the Rails - Speeder Style
My dad has always been a train fan. To help pay his way through UCLA, he worked at Union Station in Los Angeles. He and my grandpa watched the transition from steam to diesel and lived through the fading glory days of rail travel.
When I came along, I joined the tradition. We…

Encouraging our kids to dream up new ideas and improve on old ideas can put them on the road to success. Making sure they understand that there are clear rules about owning ideas, and what they are allowed to do with ideas they do not own, will help keep them from driving into a ditch along the…

Blogging Content and Working With the Community Leaders
Hey everyone! First, I want to say welcome to all the folks that have joined us due to, and since, GeekDad Day. We are really, really happy to see you all here, and we can feel the excitement growing for our little corner of the internets.
I want to take a moment and talk about blogging here on the Community. As this is in many ways an experiment, we are all still working out the kinks, and some irregularities will come up from time to time. Our policies are not perfect, and we're all…

My Dad Was a Geek
The Dark still makes me uneasy.
Two kids of my own, married, and I still have troubles walking into an unlit basement. Silly, yes, but watching Salem's Lot at seven didn't help foster bravery points.
However I'm not here to talk about my cowardice. I'm here to talk about my dad, who is a geek. He's still alive, so this is no Chicken Soup for…

Summer Activity Themes for Bored Geeklets
I don't know about any of the rest of you, but the time that's hardest for our geeklets is the time when school lets out. They don't sing about lack of pencils and books at our house. Nope! They moan and complain about how bored they are and no amount of chores and jobs tends to help the…

For the past five years, my wife and I have participated in the annual Post Hunt in downtown Washington DC. The Hunt is a series of puzzles scattered throughout a portion of the city, and thousands of people run around trying…

Obsessing About Failure
Earlier this week, Adam Savage, maker, father, madman, and co-host of Discovery Channel's "Mythbusters", spoke in his podcast about being a Geek Dad. It's well worth the 23 minutes to listen to the whole thing, but if you don't have the…

Would you like to write for GeekDad?
We get quite a few people asking if they can write for GeekDad. I think they assume it's some fancy, high-paying gig, with masseuses and a nice dining room, like Google.
It isn't.
GeekDad is a bunch of dads and moms around the world who are geeks, and parents, and like to blog about the stuff that interests them. There *can* be a (very) little money in it, but mostly it's done for the fun of it. There is some measure of exposure (we are on Wired.com after all), and we all get…

#GeekDadDay Instagram Challenge
Unless you’ve been living under a rock or not reading WIRED (which in our world is pretty much the same thing), you'll know that this Sunday we celebrate the first ever GeekDad Day. WIRED has officially taken over Father’s Day and is pulling out all of the stops for this special family of…

Mods for Compressed Air Rockets and Launcher

Geek Dad Readers,
I would love to hear from you on some mods to work on this summer for my Compressed Air Rocket and Launcher - You can find build directions on MAKE Projects. It was posted on the MAKE blog today with some good comments already. Things I'm thinking are a parachute, glider or helicopter recover system. How to launch a video comer and have it come back down intact. See blog post here: …

Show Off Being a GeekDad
I’m not a dad, but I am a geek. When I first saw GeekDad and a post about celebrating GeekDad Day this Father’s Day I was very intrigued. There are lots of dads that I work with that are, in no way do I want to insult them, geeks. The stories I hear about the time they spend with their kids…

Venus Transit - Fun times, and a surprise at the end
I took my telescope with solar filter down to my son's school, and for three hours entertained a stream of kids, teachers, and parents with the progress of Venus across the face of the sun, with the added bonus of sunspots thrown in. The attached picture was taken through the eyepiece using an iPhone.…
