A Letter to Dr. Jack Horner

Dear Dr. Horner,

My five year old son is HUGELY obsessed with dinosaurs. He has seen all three Jurassic Park movies, watched several documentaries about dinosaurs, has dinosaur toys and books, and even knows where one of his older dinosaur books that we got at a used book sale has incorrect information with regards to our current understanding of dinosaur evolution and behavior, etc.

This morning while watching the special "Dinosaurs: Return to Life?" on one of his Discovery DVD's, when they announced you: "Jack Horner is (etc. etc.)" My son loks at me and we have this conversation:

"That's Jack Horner, Dad."

"You're right, that is. Very good."

"Daddy, is he real?"

"Yes, Jack Horner is a real paleontologist alive and working today."

"Wow. Where can we find him?"

"Well, I think he's digging in Wyoming or Montana right now..."

So, Dr. Horner, I just wanted to let you know that in the eyes of at least one 5 year old boy, you are larger than life on scale with Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. Congratulations and we would both love to meet you some day.

That's so cool! While my mother didn't let me watch Jurassic Park when I was in elementary school, I did have dinosaur books galore, as well as being really into Dino Riders. I learned all the Greek names, and could tell the carnivores from the herbivores by the age of 6. Eric Boardman and Gary Owens probably got me going...but it was Dr Horner that turned it from fascination to science.
