The big reason why I find myself writing blog entries for GeekDad Community is that GeekDad has been extremely useful to me over the last few years. It validates a particular style of parenting and it has been a huge source of new ideas. There is much for us to share at this nexus of involved parenting and exuberance for science, technology, and the culture surrounding them.
To this end, I think it would be useful for us to have a list of GeekDad recommended software for repurposing old computers. Yes, much of the focus these days is on apps for iOS and Android, but even as we integrate these new devices into our homes, many of us still have old computers lying around. I would like to generate a list of top recommended software using the GeekDad forum over the next few weeks, and then put it out there as a blog post. If the idea floats, someone else from the GeekDad Community can come along after a while, run a forum query, and then update the list.
So, here it goes. I'm just going to throw this out there. We are looking for software that is ideally free, cross-platform, and fairly robust in terms of working with old hardware and old operating systems. We may find that we have to break the list down into platform specific lists, but let's see what we come up with first.
