Rt.com is reporting a meteor came down in the Ural Mountains in Russia. The meteor hit at 9:30am local time or 3:30 GMT which is 10:30 pm Eastern standard time.  It exploded in the skys above the City of Chelyabinsk.  The Flash from the exploding meteor could be seen as far away as Kazakhstan. Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics told RIA-Novosis quoted by RT.com as say the rock was a meter is diameter and weighed a as much as much or more then a ton. 

The Chelyabinsk regional governor's office is reporting that the meteorite fell into a lake near Chebarkul. Residents of the city Chelyabinsk report that the air smelled like gun powder.  Yelena Smirnykh of the Emergency Situations Ministry reports that it was a single meteorite.  The large amount of damage was created by the meteors impact wave as it passed throught the lower part of the earths atmosphere.

This has gotten me so excited regarding space and science again. I hope folks realize how big this thing is in our lives and how little we are to it. :)
